This transceiver is designed for 3.3V CAN controllers and microcontrollers — it is not a 5V part. If your host MCU runs on 5V logic, you will need level translation on the TXD and RXD pins; the transceiver's bus pins (CANH, CANL) are supply-relative and tolerate common-mode voltage up to the absolute maximum, but the logic interface expects 3.3V levels. The half-duplex architecture means the driver and receiver share the bus; the protocol layer (the CAN controller) handles arbitration and bus access timing.
