Half-duplex RS-485 at 115 kbps — the bus margin call
At 115 kbps the bit period is about 8.7 µs, so the driver's rise/fall time doesn't eat into the sampling window. This is the sweet spot for factory-floor RS-485 networks running Modbus RTU or Profibus DP at 115.2 kbaud — fast enough for most sensor polling loops, slow enough that cable capacitance and stub length aren't critical. If your application needs 1 Mbps or higher, this part isn't the right fit; look at the SN65HVD1786 or SN65HVD1787 family members instead.
Rework note: 8-SOIC is a friend under the hot air
The body's low thermal mass means it reflows cleanly with a standard hot-air station — just preheat the board to avoid cold joints on the ground pad. No exposed pad to solder, no hidden leads.
