What this 555 timer is and where it fits
The Texas Instruments SE555P is a single 555-type timer/oscillator in an 8-pin DIP package — the classic through-hole form factor that still populates thousands of legacy boards and new low-volume designs. It runs on a 4.5V to 18V supply rail and draws 10 mA typical, which means it works straight off a 5V logic rail or a 12V industrial bus without an extra regulator. The -55°C to 125°C operating range is the military-grade temperature band — this is the part you reach for when a commercial 555 would drift or fail in an engine bay, a satellite thermal-vac chamber, or a downhole tool that sees 105°C ambient.
Repair bench fit — the 8-DIP package
The 8-DIP (0.300" wide, 7.62 mm pitch) is a through-hole package that sockets into a standard DIP-8 footprint or solders directly into plated-through holes — no hot-air rework station needed, just a soldering iron and a desoldering pump. When a board comes in with a dead 555 timer, the scorch mark is usually around the output pin or the supply pin if a downstream short pulled the rail. The SE555P drops into the same socket as any industry-standard 555, so the swap takes under five minutes.
