4.096V fixed reference — the ADC/DAC anchor
The Texas Instruments REF5040IDRG4 is a precision series voltage reference that puts out a fixed 4.096V — a common full-scale voltage for 12-bit and 16-bit ADCs and DACs that simplifies the math (1 LSB = 1 mV for a 12-bit converter). The ±0.05% initial tolerance means you can skip a trim pot in most 12-bit systems and still stay within the accuracy budget.
Noise and drift — the stability story
For a 4.096V reference feeding a 16-bit ADC, 3 µVp-p is about 0.2 LSB of noise, which keeps the noise budget clean without external filtering. Temperature drift is 3 ppm/°C typical.
Input voltage range is 4.296V to 18V, so it runs from a 5V rail with 200 mV headroom or straight off a 12V or 15V supply. The 10 mA output current can bias multiple ADC reference inputs or a small resistive load without a buffer. Quiescent supply current is 1.2 mA typical — low enough that the reference itself does not dominate the power budget in a battery-powered or loop-powered design.
