8-bit I/O expander with interrupt — what the specs mean for your BOM
The NXP PCA9554DB is an 8-bit I²C/SMBus I/O expander in a 16-SSOP package, designed to add GPIO ports to a host microcontroller over a two-wire bus. The 400 kHz clock frequency keeps bus transactions fast enough for polling status registers or toggling LEDs, while the push-pull output type eliminates the need for external pull-up resistors on output pins. Eight I/O channels, each rated for 10 mA source and 25 mA sink, are enough to drive indicator LEDs or read banked switches without a separate driver IC. The interrupt output (IRQ) fires on any input change, letting the host sleep between events — a common trick in battery-powered panels or remote sensor nodes. The POR (power-on reset) feature ensures the outputs default to a known state at power-up, which avoids glitches on relays or actuators during a brownout recovery.
