The NXP PCA9554APW is an 8-bit I²C- and SMBus-compatible GPIO expander that gives a microcontroller eight additional push-pull I/O lines through a two-wire serial bus. It includes a power-on reset (POR) circuit that initializes the I/O to inputs at power-up, and an interrupt output that signals the host when an input changes state — useful for polling-free edge detection in keypads, sensor monitoring, or front-panel control. The 16-TSSOP package is a fine-pitch SMD that is hand-solderable with a decent iron and flux, though a hot-air station makes it easier.
For a new design, the pin-compatible PCA9554PW (without the 'A' suffix) is the direct functional alternative — same 16-TSSOP footprint, same I²C interface, same 8-bit I/O count. If you are qualifying a BOM line, the NRND flag is a signal to lock in a last-time-buy window or switch to the active sibling before the supply tightens.
