The three 24-bit sigma-delta ADCs are the headline differentiator of the I2xx family. For a design that needs simultaneous sampling of multiple low-level sensor signals — such as voltage and current in a single-phase energy meter — these converters eliminate the need for an external ADC or a separate analog front-end. The 24-bit resolution provides the dynamic range for shunt-based current sensing without a programmable gain amplifier in many cases. This integration directly reduces BOM count and board area compared to pairing a general-purpose MCU with an external sigma-delta converter.
