256 bytes RAM — sizing the firmware budget
With only 256 x 8 bits of RAM, this part is built for lean firmware — think sensor polling loops, simple state machines, or communication protocol handling where data buffers stay small. The 8 KB Flash is enough for moderate control algorithms or a small bootloader plus application. If your design needs larger packet buffers or multiple peripheral stacks, you'll want to step up to a higher-RAM MSP430 variant in the same family.

Package and footprint — through-hole DIP
The 20-pin DIP (0.300", 7.62 mm) package with 0.100" pitch is breadboard-friendly and hand-solderable. Mounting type is through-hole. The 16 general-purpose I/O pins are enough for a handful of sensors, switches, and a serial link.
