16-bit ultra-low-power MCU for battery and industrial designs

Memory and I/O — where the budget bites
With 8KB of Flash and 512 bytes of RAM, this is a lean part. The firmware engineer needs to count bytes: a full USB stack won't fit, but a Modbus RTU slave or a simple sensor-logging loop with a 256-byte buffer will.
Package and rework — 28-TSSOP is a friendly footprint
The 28-TSSOP package (0.173" body width, 4.40mm) is a standard SOIC-derivative with 0.65mm pitch. The 24 I/O are all on the outer rows, so routing a two-layer board is straightforward. No exposed thermal pad means no via-stitch worry; the part dissipates well under 100mW at 16MHz.
For a BOM line, this means no forced redesign cycle in the near term.
