The 20-TSSOP package gives you 16 I/O lines, plus I²C and SPI through the USI peripheral.
The USI module handles I²C and SPI in software-configurable mode, which is fine for low-speed sensor buses but not for high-throughput streaming.
Within the MSP430G2xx family, the MSP430G2202 and MSP430G2302 offer higher Flash and RAM in the same 20-TSSOP footprint, but verify the peripheral set — the USI module and I/O count match, so a firmware migration is straightforward if the memory budget needs headroom.
