FRAM-based MSP430 for industrial metering and display control
It belongs to the MSP430™ FRAM series, where the program memory is 128 KB of ferroelectric RAM (FRAM) instead of conventional Flash — a non-volatile memory that writes at bus speed with negligible power overhead and supports 10¹⁵ read/write cycles. This makes it a strong fit for applications that log data frequently or need field-reprogrammable firmware without wearing out the memory: smart meters, building automation panels, portable medical instruments, and sensor nodes that wake briefly to sample and log then return to sleep. The 80-LQFP package (12x12 mm body) brings out 63 general-purpose I/O lines, plus a segment LCD controller that can drive a glass display directly, saving a separate display driver IC.
If your design lives in a conditioned server room or consumer appliance, the margin is generous; if it goes into a hot motor-drive cabinet, verify that the 85°C ceiling leaves enough headroom above the internal ambient.
Integrated peripherals reduce external component count
This part packs a 12-channel 12-bit ADC, a real-time clock with watchdog timer, a brown-out reset circuit, and a DMA controller that can move data between peripherals and FRAM without CPU intervention. The LCD driver supports up to 320 segments (common for 8-digit numeric displays or custom icon panels), which eliminates a separate COG display driver from the bill of materials.
