16-bit MSP430 with 128 KB FRAM — metering-grade mixed-signal MCU
The Texas Instruments MSP430FR6045IPZ is a 16-bit MSP430 CPUXV2 microcontroller from the MSP430™ FRAM family, clocked at 16 MHz. It carries 128 KB of FRAM program memory and 8 KB of RAM, plus an 18-channel 12-bit ADC, 76 I/O lines, and a full set of serial interfaces including I2C, SPI, and UART. The part operates from 1.8 V to 3.6 V over the industrial temperature range of -40°C to 85°C, housed in a 100-LQFP (14×14 mm) package. This combination of FRAM non-volatility, analog density, and low-power 16-bit core makes it a natural fit for ultrasonic flow meters, gas and water metering, and other battery-powered sensor nodes where data-logging endurance and field reprogrammability matter.
FRAM endurance — no wear-leveling needed
The 128 KB FRAM program memory is the headline differentiator here. Unlike Flash, FRAM writes at bus speed with essentially unlimited endurance — no wear-leveling, no page-erase penalty, and data retention without a backup battery. For a meter that logs consumption every second for a decade, that removes a whole class of firmware complexity. The 8 KB RAM handles stack and scratchpad; the 18-channel 12-bit ADC reads the ultrasonic transducer pair directly, saving an external PGA or mux.
Lifecycle and sourcing reality
One entry flags end-of-life hot, another lists the part as Active. This ambiguity means the manufacturer may be transitioning the MSP430FR6045 family or running a last-time-buy window.
Peripheral set for flow metering and industrial sensing
Beyond the ADC, the MSP430FR6045IPZ includes a brown-out detect/reset, POR, DMA controller, LCD driver, PWM timer, and watchdog timer. The LCD segment drive is a practical addition for on-meter displays without an external driver chip. The DMA can move ADC samples directly to FRAM without CPU intervention — useful for averaging ultrasonic time-of-flight readings. The internal oscillator keeps the BOM simple, though an external crystal can be used for tighter timing on the UART or SPI bus.
