128 KB FRAM — no erase penalty, unified memory
The MSP430FR59891IRGCT uses 128 KB of FRAM (ferroelectric RAM) as its program memory, not flash. FRAM writes at bus speed without the erase-before-write cycle that flash requires — a firmware update that takes 100 ms in flash finishes in under 1 ms here, and the 100 trillion write-cycle endurance means wear-leveling is unnecessary. The 2K x 8 RAM supplements the FRAM for stack and scratchpad data; the FRAM itself can be used as both code and data space, so a separate EEPROM for parameter storage is redundant.
16 MHz CPUXV2 core, 48 I/O, 12-bit ADC
The 16-bit MSP430 CPUXV2 core runs at 16 MHz — enough for real-time sensor polling and control loops without an external oscillator, since the internal oscillator is the clock source. 48 GPIOs in a 64-VQFN package (9x9 mm exposed pad) give a high pin count for the footprint. The 12-channel 12-bit ADC on-chip handles analog inputs from temperature, pressure, or current sensors directly.
On-chip peripherals reduce external BOM
Brown-out detect, power-on reset, and a watchdog timer are integrated — no external supervisor IC needed. Connectivity includes I²C, SPI, UART/USART, and IrDA, covering sensor buses, serial displays, and wireless module interfaces.
Active lifecycle, ROHS3, 64-VQFN package
ROHS3 compliant, so it passes EU substance restrictions without exemption paperwork.
