16 KB FRAM MCU for low-power control nodes
Its 16 KB of FRAM program memory combines non-volatile storage with fast, low-energy writes — a practical fit for data-logging, sensor hubs, and battery-powered controllers where every microamp matters. The 1K x 8 RAM handles call stacks and scratchpad buffers without eating into the FRAM endurance budget. Serial connectivity includes I²C, SPI, and UART, plus IrDA and LINbus for automotive or industrial subnets.
FRAM: no EEPROM, no wear-leveling headache
The 16 KB FRAM program memory is the headline feature. For a firmware engineer, this means the bootloader and application can share the same memory array without the usual write-latency gymnastics. The 1K x 8 RAM is conventional SRAM — use it for stack and volatile data, not persistent storage.
With the internal oscillator and brown-out reset enabled, the standby current is typically in the low microamp range — a key spec for the battery-life calculator on a wireless sensor node. The POR and BOR peripherals are on-chip, so no external supervisor IC is needed for basic power-fail detection.
The 28-TSSOP package is a common footprint, so second-sourcing within the MSP430 FRAM family is straightforward if a pin-compatible density variant is needed later.
