FRAM memory and 16 MHz core for low-power sensor nodes
The MSP430FR2111IRLLR is a 16-bit MCU from the MSP430 FRAM family, built around the MSP430 CPU16 core running at 16 MHz. Its 3.75 KB of FRAM program memory combines non-volatility with write speeds that outpace flash — no erase cycles, no sector management, and writes at bus speed. For a sensor node that logs data and sleeps, FRAM means the last reading survives a power cut without a backup battery. The 1K x 8 RAM is modest, but the FRAM acts as unified memory — code and data share the same space, so the RAM ceiling is less restrictive than on a flash-based MCU with separate RAM and program banks.
The 24-VFQFN package with exposed pad (3x3 mm) keeps the footprint small enough for a two-layer board.
Active lifecycle and compliance
ROHS3 compliant, so it ships into EU, UK, and global markets without restriction. On-board peripherals include brown-out detect, power-on reset, PWM, and watchdog timer — the MCU can run stand-alone without external supervisor ICs. Connectivity covers IrDA, SCI, SPI, and UART/USART, which covers the common fieldbus and debug interfaces for a low-pin-count design.
