The MSP430F5635IZCAT runs a 16-bit MSP430 CPUXV2 core at 20 MHz — not the fastest in the F5xx family, but the clock rate determines the instruction throughput for real-time control loops and communication stack processing. On-chip memory is 256 KB flash for program storage and 18 KB RAM for data. The flash holds a moderate-size application with a USB stack and sensor fusion library; the RAM budget constrains the number of simultaneous packet buffers or logging records before external memory is needed.
74 general-purpose I/O lines in the 113-ball VFBGA package give the layout engineer room to route parallel interfaces, keypad matrices, and external memory buses alongside the serial peripherals. The 0.50 mm ball pitch on the 7x7 mm NFBGA requires a multi-layer PCB for full fan-out — a two-layer board breaks out only the outer ball rows. Connectivity includes USB plus I²C, SPI, UART/USART, LINbus, and IrDA. This peripheral mix suits a system that aggregates data from multiple sensor types over different serial protocols and streams it to a host over USB without an external bridge chip.
