The connectivity block covers I²C, IrDA, SCI, SPI, and UART/USART, so it can talk to common sensors, ADCs, or a host controller without extra glue. With 31 I/O lines in a 40-pin QFN, most of the package pins are usable for GPIO or alternate functions.
That means it's safe to specify into a new BOM or replenish an existing line without worrying about a forced redesign.
