The 120 KB program space can hold a moderate firmware stack with a real-time OS, communication protocol libraries, and application logic, while the 4 KB RAM handles data buffers and stack frames.
The 8 MHz clock rate is the maximum CPU speed for this part. At 8 MHz the MSP430 CPUX core executes most instructions in a single cycle, so the effective throughput is roughly 8 MIPS. If the application needs faster math or higher sensor sampling, the MSP430F5xxx series with up to 25 MHz is the next tier up.
For a production BOM this means no imminent last-time-buy risk and continued manufacturer support.
