8MHz core, 32KB flash – where it lands in the MSP430 family
The MSP430F4270IRGZT is a 16-bit MCU in TI's MSP430x4xx series, clocked at 8 MHz with 32 KB of program flash and 256 bytes of RAM. That RAM is tight — enough for a small control loop with a few state variables, but any data logging or buffering needs to use the flash as backing store.
On-chip ADC and LCD drive — what the peripherals actually unlock
A 16-bit sigma-delta ADC and a 12-bit DAC are integrated — the ADC resolution suits low-frequency sensor acquisition (temperature, pressure, strain gauge) where 16 bits gives meaningful dynamic range without an external converter. The LCD driver peripheral can directly segment-drive a glass LCD panel, a feature unique to the MSP430x4xx family that eliminates a separate LCD controller IC. Brown-out detect and POR are on-die, so the reset circuit needs only a pull-up resistor. The watchdog timer is also integrated — no external supervisor chip required for basic fault recovery.
48-VQFN package — board-fit and thermal note
Housed in a 48-VFQFN with exposed pad (7x7 mm body), the MSP430F4270IRGZT requires a thermal land pattern on the PCB for the center pad. 32 I/O lines are brought out — enough for a keypad matrix plus a few sensor interrupts and a serial interface. The package pitch is 0.50 mm typical for 48-VQFN; a 4-layer board with microvias makes fan-out manageable, but a 2-layer board will struggle to route all 32 signals without via-in-pad.
Temperature grade and compliance
This covers most factory-floor, outdoor enclosure, and automotive cabin applications but not under-hood (125°C) or downhole environments. ROHS3 compliant per the active lifecycle status.
