The internal oscillator keeps the clock going without an external crystal for non-critical timing. For precision baud rates or RTC accuracy, you can feed an external clock through the oscillator pins — the internal source is adequate for most UART and SPI timing at 16 MHz.
Memory and peripherals — what the 32 KB / 4 KB gets you
32 KB of Flash with 256 B of info memory (for calibration constants or unique IDs) and 4 KB of RAM. That RAM is tight for buffering large ADC scans or Ethernet packets — plan for a 256-byte or 512-byte ring buffer, not a full frame. The 8-channel 12-bit ADC samples at the MCU's internal rate; good for thermistor, potentiometer, or current-sense inputs without an external converter. The IrDA and SCI support means you can do infrared communication or connect to legacy serial peripherals without extra glue logic. Built-in brown-out reset and power-on reset keep the MCU from corrupting Flash during a sagging supply — critical for battery-powered or capacitor-fed designs where the rail can droop during a motor start.
