16-bit core, 1 KB flash — where it fits
The MSP430F2101TDGVR is a 16-bit microcontroller from the MSP430F2xx family, running at 16 MHz with 1 KB of program flash and 128 bytes of RAM. That memory budget suits a single control loop — a fan speed controller reading one thermistor and driving a PWM output, or a battery monitor logging voltage once a second. The internal oscillator and integrated brown-out reset, POR, PWM, and watchdog timer keep the external BOM down to a decoupling cap and maybe a programming header.
Temperature range and package — bench reality
The 20-TVSOP package (4.40 mm wide, 0.65 mm pitch) is hand-solderable with a fine tip and flux — the centre pad is absent, so no thermal-paddle reflow trickery. Pin 1 is chamfered on the package corner; a quick visual check before hot air saves a lifted pad. The 16 I/O pins include the JTAG/SBW debug interface — two-wire Spy-Bi-Wire means a four-pin header (Vcc, GND, SBWTDIO, SBWTCK) is enough for in-circuit programming and debug. No external crystal needed for most applications; the internal DCO is trimmed to ±1% accuracy over temperature.
