16-bit MCU with integrated 24-bit sigma-delta ADC
This makes the part purpose-built for single-phase energy metering, precision sensor front-ends, and industrial measurement where you need to digitise a low-level analog signal without an external converter.
What the 24-bit ADC means for the BOM
Most MCUs in this price and power tier top out at 12- or 16-bit ADCs. The MSP430AFE253IPWR's three 24-bit sigma-delta converters let you sample current and voltage channels directly from a shunt or CT, with enough resolution to resolve microvolt-level signals. That eliminates an external ADC or amplifier stage in a typical energy meter front-end. The trade-off is conversion speed — sigma-delta ADCs are slower than SAR types, so this part is a fit for DC or low-frequency AC measurements, not for high-speed data acquisition. The 11 available I/O lines handle SPI or UART communication to a host processor or display driver.
Industrial temperature and 24-TSSOP footprint
For production BOMs, the active status means no immediate risk of forced redesign.
