What this RS232 transceiver is and where it fits
The Texas Instruments MAX3318EIPWR is a full-duplex RS232 transceiver packing two drivers and two receivers into a 20-pin TSSOP. It handles data rates up to 460Kbps across a 2.25V to 3V supply rail — a narrow low-voltage window that means this part is designed for 3V or 2.5V logic systems, not legacy 5V RS232 buses. The 300 mV receiver hysteresis gives it decent noise rejection on cables up to a few metres, which is typical for industrial control panels and test equipment where the RS232 run stays inside the cabinet.
Temperature grade and environment
Rated for -40°C to 85°C, so it's comfortable in factory-floor enclosures, outdoor telecom cabinets, and unheated equipment rooms. Not a military-grade part, but the industrial temperature range covers the vast majority of commercial and light-industrial applications. The 20-TSSOP package is surface-mount, so hand-rework on a repair bench is doable with hot air — just watch the pitch.
Sourcing and lifecycle reality
For a BOM freeze or a repair stock order, this is a clean line item.
