For typical 115.2 kbps or 230.4 kbps UART links, the 250 kbps ceiling is adequate and keeps EMI lower than faster-slewing parts.

The 3V to 5.5V supply range lets you run this transceiver from a 3.3V rail without a separate level shifter, simplifying the BOM for mixed-voltage designs.
