The MAX3232IDR comes in a 16-SOIC (3.90mm width) package. That's a standard footprint — easy to hand-solder or reflow. The 1.27mm pin pitch gives good clearance for routing the RS-232 lines and decoupling caps. If you're doing a rework, the SOIC body lifts clean with hot air at 300°C for about 30 seconds; the 0.154-inch width means the nozzle can hit both rows without cooking adjacent parts.
