For new designs or BOM continuity, the closest functional replacement within the same family is the MAX3232EIDB (also in SSOP-16, same pinout and electrical specs). The 'E' suffix on the obsolete variant indicated lead-free (RoHS) finish; the replacement carries the same environmental compliance.
At 250 kbps, this transceiver is suited for standard UART communication at common baud rates (115200, 57600, etc.) with margin. It is not a high-speed RS-232 part — designs requiring 1 Mbps or more need a different driver.
