What this RS-232 transceiver does on the board
It integrates two drivers and two receivers, handling the voltage-level translation between a 5 V logic UART and the ±12 V swing RS-232 bus.
The 250 kbps data rate is the practical ceiling for the classic MAX232 charge-pump architecture. That covers 115200 baud with margin, but if your design needs 460800 baud or 1 Mbps, this part won't close the eye. For standard UART speeds up to 115200 baud, the 250 kbps rating gives enough headroom for cable capacitance and loading. The receiver hysteresis of 500 mV helps reject noise on longer cable runs, which is useful in industrial environments where the RS-232 lines leave the cabinet.
Package and footprint — 16-TSSOP
The 16-TSSOP body (4.40 mm width, 0.173" pitch) is a common footprint shared with other MAX232 variants in TSSOP. If your board already has a MAX232IPWR or MAX232IDWR, the pad layout is the same. The surface-mount package reflows with a standard lead-free profile.
