What the 250 kbps data rate means for your BOM
The Texas Instruments MAX232EIDWG4 is a 5V-only RS-232 transceiver in a 16-SOIC package, delivering two drivers and two receivers at a maximum data rate of 250 kbps. That data rate is the spec that catches people out: it's fine for legacy UART links at 115.2 kbps or slower, but it won't keep up with a 1 Mbps industrial bus or a high-speed debug port. If your design needs 1 Mbps or more, you're looking at a MAX3223 or a similar 3V-to-5V part with a faster slew rate.
Supply voltage and temperature grade — the fit check
If your board runs 3.3 V logic, you need a level shifter or a different transceiver like the MAX3232. The 500 mV receiver hysteresis gives you some noise margin on the RS-232 lines, which helps in electrically noisy settings.
