The Texas Instruments MAX232EID is a classic RS-232 transceiver, handling the voltage-level translation between a UART's logic signals and the ±5V to ±12V swing required by the RS-232 bus. Rated for a 250kbps data rate, it covers the common 115.2kbps and 230.4kbps UART speeds with margin. This is a 5V-only part — the supply range is 4.5V to 5.5V — so it's a direct drop into a legacy 5V logic rail.
