The 500 mV receiver hysteresis gives noise margin on the incoming RS232 lines, which matters when the cable runs through a factory floor.

5V supply rail — not a 3.3V part

The supply range is 4.5V to 5.5V, so this transceiver is not compatible with a 3.3V-only system without a regulator or a separate 5V rail. If your board runs on 3.3V logic, you need a different RS232 part (like the MAX3232 family) that integrates a charge-pump for 3.3V operation. The MAX232DRE4's charge pump generates the ±10V RS232 levels from the 5V input, but it won't start reliably below about 4.5V.

Temperature grade: commercial, not industrial

If your application sees freezing or hot ambient conditions, look at the extended-temperature variants in the MAX232 family.
