What the 120 kbps data rate means for your BOM

Data rate is 120 kbps.

Lifecycle and sourcing reality

The MAX202CD is Active and RoHS3 compliant per the manufacturer. That means it's still a valid choice for new designs and production runs, and we can source it through our distribution network.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MAX202CD and MAX232?

The MAX202CD and MAX232 are both 2/2 RS-232 transceivers in a 16-SOIC, but the MAX202CD typically runs at 120 kbps while the MAX232 is often rated at 120 kbps as well — the real difference is the charge-pump capacitor configuration. The MAX202 uses four 0.1 µF capacitors; the MAX232 uses four 1 µF capacitors. In practice, if your board is laid out for the MAX232's larger caps, the MAX202CD won't be a drop-in without changing the capacitor values. Pin-compatible otherwise.

Can I use MAX202CD as a replacement for MAX232?

Yes, the MAX202CD is pin-compatible with the MAX232, but you must change the external charge-pump capacitors from 1 µF to 0.1 µF. If the board already has 0.1 µF caps, it's a direct swap. If not, you'll need to modify the BOM or the PCB.

What is the lead time for MAX202CD?

Lead time is confirmed at quote time against an RFQ. We don't publish a blanket lead time because it varies with current factory and distributor stock. Submit an RFQ and we'll give you a real lead time.
