3.3V rail at 3A — the dropout headroom decision
The LP3856ES-3.3 is a single-output positive LDO regulator delivering a fixed 3.3V at up to 3A continuous from a 7V max input rail. The 0.6V max dropout at full load means the input must stay above 3.9V across the load range to keep the output in regulation — a 5V rail with 0.5V of ripple still has margin, but a 3.6V rail does not.
PSRR across the audio band
PSRR is specified at 73 dB to 57 dB at 120 Hz — the 73 dB figure at the low end of the band attenuates 120 Hz rectifier ripple by a factor of ~4500, dropping to ~700 at the upper end. For a noise-sensitive analog front-end powered from a switching preregulator, the ripple rejection below 1 kHz is strong enough that post-filtering may be unnecessary.
Industrial temp range and protection set
Operating junction temperature spans -40°C to 125°C, covering industrial ambient conditions. An enable pin and an error flag output are available for sequenced power-up and fault monitoring.
DDPAK package — thermal pad layout note
The DDPAK/TO-263-5 package (TO-263-6 with one tab) has an exposed thermal pad on the bottom. The tab is the ground path and the primary heat conduit — the PCB copper area under the pad sets the effective RθJA. A 1-square-inch 2-oz copper pour on the top layer, with thermal vias to an internal ground plane, keeps the junction below 125°C at 3A output with a 5V input.
