Wide-input PWM controller for isolated DC-DC stages
The Texas Instruments LM5041AMTCX/NOPB is a current-mode PWM controller designed for isolated DC-DC converters using half-bridge or push-pull topologies. It operates from a 15V to 90V supply rail, covering the input range typical of telecom rectifiers, industrial bus converters, and automotive battery-fed systems. The controller supports synchronous rectification and includes dead-time control, frequency control, and soft-start — features that simplify loop compensation and reduce external component count in the power stage.
Switching frequency and transformer sizing trade-off
The oscillator can be set to either 200 kHz or 600 kHz. At 200 kHz, switching losses are lower and transformer core losses are reduced, but the magnetics are larger. At 600 kHz, the transformer and output filter components shrink, though gate-drive losses and snubber dissipation increase — a choice that depends on the available board space and thermal budget. Clock sync capability allows the controller to lock to an external clock, useful when multiple converters share a board and their switching harmonics must be phase-aligned to reduce input ripple.
Temperature grade and deployment environment
The wide junction range also provides margin for self-heating in compact enclosures. The supplier device package is 16-TSSOP.
