Noise and temperature drift — the precision angle
Output noise is specified at 20 µVrms over a 10 Hz to 10 kHz bandwidth — a clean figure for a 1.225 V reference, meaning the reference adds less than 0.002 % of its output as noise in that band. For a 12-bit ADC with a 1.225 V reference, that drift is about 0.6 LSB — acceptable for most general-purpose measurements but worth derating if the system sees wide thermal swings.
Shunt current and load drive
As a shunt reference, the LM4041D12IDBZRG4 regulates by sinking current through its cathode. That 12 mA ceiling limits how much load the reference can drive directly — if the downstream ADC or comparator draws more than a few mA, you'll need a buffer or a higher-current reference. The shunt topology also means a series resistor is required between the supply and the reference; its value sets the total current through the device and must be chosen so that the cathode current stays between 80 µA and 12 mA over all load and supply conditions.
