The shunt can sink up to 12 mA continuous, which covers most reference loads — a single ADC input, an op-amp bias, or a small resistive divider. The minimum cathode current is 80 µA, so the bias resistor from the supply rail must be sized to deliver at least that much current at the lowest supply voltage. In a battery-powered design, that 80 µA floor sets the quiescent overhead of the reference branch.
