Product details

Obsolete — sourcing this precision shunt reference

This is a shunt (two-terminal) voltage reference with a fixed 1.225V output. The 20µVrms noise over 10Hz to 10kHz keeps the reference clean for low-frequency measurement.

Biasing the shunt — cathode current and load limits

A shunt reference needs a bias resistor from the supply to the cathode. The minimum cathode current is 65 µA; the maximum output current is 12 mA. The resistor must supply both the load current and the cathode current, keeping the cathode current between 65 µA and 12 mA over all conditions. In a 3.3V circuit, a 1.6 kΩ resistor biases the reference at about 1.3 mA — well within range.

SOT-23-3 package — footprint and rework

The LM4041BIM3X-1.2 comes in a standard SOT-23-3 package (TO-236-3 / SC-59 compatible). Surface-mount only. The three-pin layout is straightforward: cathode, anode, and no-connect. For rework, a standard hot-air profile at 260°C peak works — no moisture sensitivity concern beyond the standard MSL1 bake if the tape has been exposed.

Frequently asked questions

Is LM4041BIM3X-1.2 obsolete?

Yes, the LM4041BIM3X-1.2 is listed as obsolete by Texas Instruments. No direct replacement is officially designated.

Can LM4041BIM3X-1.2 be used as a 1.2V reference?

Yes. The fixed output is 1.225V, which is the standard 1.2V-class reference voltage. The ±0.2% tolerance means the output is between 1.222V and 1.228V at 25°C.
