As a shunt reference, it behaves like a two-terminal Zener — it requires a bias resistor from the supply to set the cathode current, which must stay within the 85 µA minimum to 15 mA maximum range for proper regulation.
Existing production can still be sourced, but plan a transition to an active-grade sibling for new BOMs.
The LM4040DIM3X-5.0 has a ±1% initial tolerance on the 5V output. For tighter accuracy, the LM4040A-grade offers 0.1% and the C-grade offers 0.5% in the same package.
