As a shunt reference, the LM4040CIM3X-10 regulates by shunting current through the cathode to ground. Design the bias resistor to supply at least 100 µA through the reference under all load conditions, and ensure the total current through the device does not exceed 15 mA to stay within the power dissipation limits of the SOT-23-3 package. The ±0.5% tolerance bin (C grade) represents a middle accuracy tier in the LM4040 family, between the ±0.1% A grade and the ±1% D grade.
