What this shunt reference does on the board
It operates as a two-terminal shunt device, meaning it sinks current through a bias resistor from a higher supply rail to regulate the output voltage.
The 3V fixed output is the headline spec — this part is not adjustable, so the design must already call for a 3V reference. The ±0.5% tolerance gives you 15 mV of initial error at 25°C, which is tight enough for 8- to 10-bit ADC references without external trimming. The 15 mA maximum shunt current limits how much load the reference can drive; the bias resistor must be sized so the total current (load plus 82 µA cathode current) stays under that ceiling. The 35µVrms noise spec over 10 Hz to 10 kHz is low enough for most precision analog chains, though a 0.1 µF bypass cap at the reference output helps knock down high-frequency pickup.
