The LM4040AIZ-8.2 from Texas Instruments is a precision shunt voltage reference delivering a fixed 8.192 V output with an initial tolerance of ±0.1%. That 8.192 V level is a common bias for 12- and 16-bit ADCs and DACs that need a stable reference above the 5 V rail — think industrial analog input modules or precision sensor conditioners where the reference voltage directly sets the full-scale accuracy.
Shunt topology — output current and quiescent draw
As a shunt reference, it sinks current through a series resistor from the supply rail. The 15 mA output capability covers the reference load plus the cathode current of 95 µA — the 95 µA is what the reference itself draws to regulate. For a typical 10 V supply feeding 8.192 V through a 120 Ω resistor, the total current is about 15 mA, leaving headroom for the load.
