2.048V fixed shunt reference — the bench-level decision
It is the part you reach for when you need a stable, low-noise bias for an ADC reference input, a comparator threshold, or a DAC supply in a precision analog chain. The ±0.1% initial tolerance means the output is within 2.048V ± 2.048 mV at 25°C — tight enough for a 12-bit system without external trimming. The 100 ppm/°C drift adds about 0.2 mV over a 60°C swing, which is the real limit for 14-bit or better accuracy across temperature. Noise is specified at 35 µVrms over 10 Hz to 10 kHz, which is low enough that the reference does not dominate the noise floor in most 12- to 16-bit SAR ADC applications.
As a shunt reference, the LM4040AIM3X-2.0/NOPB acts like a precision Zener diode. It requires a series resistor from the supply rail to set the bias current, and the load current is subtracted from that bias. The cathode current range is 65 µA minimum to 15 mA maximum — the designer must size the resistor so the current stays above 65 µA under worst-case load and supply variation, and below 15 mA under light load. The SOT-23-3 package (TO-236-3 / SC-59) is a three-pin surface-mount device. The pinout is standard for this family: cathode, anode, and no-connect. The small footprint makes it easy to place close to the load on a tight PCB.
