80 MHz Cortex-M3 with Ethernet, CAN, and USB OTG — the connectivity MCU for industrial gateways
The LM3S9B92-IBZ80-C5: Its distinguishing feature is the integrated Ethernet MAC, CAN 2.0B, and USB OTG controller — a peripheral set that puts it in the industrial gateway, telematics, and building-automation controller class, not a general-purpose MCU. 256 KB Flash / 96 KB SRAM — sizing the firmware and data buffers
The 256 KB program Flash is sized for a TCP/IP stack, CANopen or EtherCAT slave stack, and a modest application layer — think a remote terminal unit (RTU) or a protocol converter. The 96 KB SRAM (organized as 96K x 8) gives enough headroom for two full Ethernet frames plus CAN message buffers and a small heap. If your firmware image pushes past 256 KB or you need a larger packet buffer, you are looking at a different density tier.
108-BGA (10x10) — footprint and layout notes
108-ball LFBGA (10x10 mm) package. 65 GPIOs and EBI/EMI signals require a four-layer PCB with a solid ground plane. Core supply is 1.235 V to 1.365 V rail.
It does not carry an AEC-Q100 automotive grade, so it is not qualified for under-hood or chassis-mounted applications. The 85°C ceiling also means it is marginal for sealed enclosures near a hot power supply without airflow — budget the thermal margin.
