50 MHz core and Ethernet — what that means for a retrofit or repair
The 50 MHz Cortex-M3 core delivers enough throughput to run a lightweight TCP/IP stack alongside application code, but the real differentiator is the integrated Ethernet MAC. This part was designed before the current generation of Cortex-M4 and M7 parts with integrated PHY; the LM3S6618 requires an external PHY chip (e.g., a DP83848) connected via the MII or RMII interface. If your existing BOM already carries that PHY, this MCU drops in without a MAC-layer redesign.
This part carries an official obsolete status. Texas Instruments has ended production; there is no direct pin-compatible replacement from TI in the Stellaris family.
