The 100-pin LQFP package provides 43 general-purpose I/Os. This part was designed for industrial and networked embedded control — think motor drives, building automation gateways, or any application needing a compact Cortex-M3 with a wired Ethernet link.
Texas Instruments no longer manufactures this device, and no direct pin-compatible replacement has been announced under the same base number. Any inventory you find will be new-old-stock or pulled from existing builds. If you are qualifying a design today, look at current-generation Cortex-M3 or Cortex-M4 parts with Ethernet — the Stellaris family was migrated to the TM4C series, but the pinout and peripheral set differ, so a board respin is required.
Key ratings and their design impact
The 50 MHz core clock is enough for protocol stacks (TCP/IP, Modbus TCP) and real-time control loops without external memory. The Ethernet MAC is a media-access controller — you still need an external PHY chip and magnetics.
