80 MHz core — what it means for the control loop
At 80 MHz, the Cortex-M3 can run a Modbus RTU or CANopen stack without starving the main application.
Memory sizing for the BOM
64 KB of Flash is enough for a modest application with a real-time OS kernel and a few protocol stacks. The 24 KB RAM handles a moderate packet buffer.
Connectivity and peripherals
The peripheral list covers CAN, USB, multiple UARTs with IrDA and LIN support, SPI, I²C, and a quadrature encoder interface. The 16-channel 10-bit ADC is adequate for basic analog monitoring.
Obsolete — sourcing reality for the LM3S5P31-IQC80-C1
This part is officially obsolete per the manufacturer. No last-time-buy window remains. That means the only channel is the independent surplus and broker market — which is exactly where we source it. We quote to order against an RFQ; availability and pricing are confirmed at quote time. If you're repairing a board that uses this MCU, the scorch mark tells you the part that died, and the question is whether you can get a real replacement. We can.
Replacement and cross-reference
No official direct replacement from TI is listed for this part. The revision variant shares the same base number but may carry errata differences.
