50 MHz Cortex-M3 — what the speed rating buys you
The 50 MHz core clock is the Cortex-M3's sweet spot for real-time control loops. At this speed, a PID update or CAN message handling completes in a few microseconds — fast enough for servo drives and industrial PLCs. The 64 KB SRAM gives you room for a modest RTOS heap and several frame buffers for the QEI or ADC data. The 256 KB Flash holds a full firmware image with room for a bootloader and a configuration table.
Peripheral set for motor control and industrial networking
The LM3S2965 includes a CAN 2.0B controller for industrial fieldbus, a quadrature encoder interface for reading motor shaft position, and PWM timers with dead-band generation for driving H-bridges. The 4-channel 10-bit ADC samples at rates suitable for current sensing in a motor phase loop. Brown-out detection and POR keep the system from running on a glitchy supply rail.
