New designs should select a current-generation Cortex-M3 or M4 part with a compatible peripheral set and supply voltage.

With 128 KB of program Flash and 64 KB of SRAM, this MCU fits in the mid-density tier of the Stellaris family. The Flash is adequate for a moderate-complexity control stack with a real-time OS, a CANopen or Modbus protocol layer, and application logic. The 64 KB RAM leaves room for a few large buffers — useful for CAN message queues or a display frame buffer — but you will need to budget carefully if the application includes extensive data logging or a TCP/IP stack without external memory.
