25 MHz core and 96 KB Flash — sizing the firmware and throughput
The 25 MHz Cortex-M3 core handles control loops, protocol stacks (CAN, Modbus over UART), and sensor fusion without a heavy scheduler. The 32K x 8 SRAM supports a couple of CAN message buffers and a moderate call stack — watch the heap usage if you are running a TCP/IP stack over the SSI or UART.
For new designs, look at the current Stellaris or Tiva C Series parts from TI — they share the Cortex-M3 core and peripheral set but differ in package and memory options.
The 100-LQFP (14x14 mm) is a standard gull-wing package with 0.5 mm pitch — straightforward to hand-solder or reflow with a hot-air station. No exposed thermal pad, so the dissipation path is through the leads only; keep the ambient airflow reasonable if running the core and peripherals near the 85°C limit.
