NRND lifecycle — sourcing posture
Texas Instruments lists the LM3S1637-IBZ50-A2T as NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs). This means the device is not intended for new product development; existing designs should plan for a last-time-buy or a migration path. For active BOM lines already using this part, we source it through independent distribution channels.
Core and memory — firmware headroom
The ARM Cortex-M3 core runs at 50 MHz, delivering the throughput needed for real-time control loops in motor-drive or sensor-fusion applications. The 128 KB on-chip flash (128K x 8) and 32 KB SRAM (32K x 8) provide enough space for a moderate application stack plus a real-time operating system kernel. Program memory is FLASH type, supporting in-system firmware updates. The 32-bit single-core architecture with a 2.25 V to 2.75 V supply range suits battery-powered or low-voltage backplane designs.
The Quadrature Encoder Interface (QEI) is directly useful for closed-loop motor position feedback without external logic. On-chip peripherals include a 4-channel 10-bit ADC, PWM outputs, a watchdog timer, brown-out detect/reset, and POR.
Package and board integration — 108-ball BGA
The device is supplied in a 108-LFBGA package (10x10 mm body, 0.80 mm ball pitch). The 108-BGA (10x10) supplier device package requires a multi-layer PCB for fan-out; the 0.80 mm pitch is within the capability of standard PCB fabrication processes. The tape-and-reel packaging (TR) is suited for automated pick-and-place assembly.
