Texas Instruments lists the LM3S1601-IBZ50-A2 as NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs). This means the part is still available for existing production but is no longer the target for new board spins.
50 MHz Cortex-M3 with 128 KB flash
The flash holds the application code and bootloader; the SRAM leaves room for a moderate stack and heap — enough for a real-time control loop with a few communication buffers. The internal oscillator means you can skip an external crystal for many designs, though the PLL still needs a reference if you push the core to 50 MHz.
108-BGA package and board integration
Housed in a 108-ball LFBGA (10x10 mm body), this is a fine-pitch BGA — not a hand-solderable package. The 0.80 mm ball pitch is manageable with a stencil and reflow oven, but a 4-layer board with via-in-pad or dog-bone fan-out is the practical minimum. The 60 GPIOs break out to the perimeter balls, so routing to peripheral connectors is straightforward if you plan the fan-out layer stack.

Connectivity and peripheral set
The part includes I²C, SPI, SSI, UART/USART, and IrDA interfaces — enough for sensor buses, serial displays, and debug UARTs. The PWM and WDT peripherals are useful for motor control loops and watchdog supervision. With 60 GPIOs, you can run a parallel LCD or a keypad matrix alongside the serial interfaces without an I/O expander.
